Excessively loose, watery, and frequent bowel movements indicate that the bowels are attempting to rid themselves of toxic irritants.
The most effective natural treatment for this condition is to use agents that absorb toxins in the digestive tract. Psyllium Hulls Combination, LOCLO, and Nature's Three are a few examples. For severe diarrhea, activated charcoal is the best choice. Be careful not to use too much of this product, however, as it is so effective it can actually cause constipation. Slick elm or marshmallow are effective remedies for infant diarrhea.
Astringents may be required to tone bowel tissue and stop fluid loss when diarrhea is extremely watery. Some of the herbs that can be used for this purpose include white oak bark or yarrow although almost any astringent may help.
For diarrhea caused by infectious organisms, Silver Shield and High Potency Garlic may be helpful. Giardia diarrhea can be treated with golden seal. Use two capsules every two hours until relief is obtained. Probiotics can help treat and prevent diarrhea caused by infectious microbes. Taking PDA and probiotics while traveling can help prevent diarrhea.
Constant diarrhea is a sign of bowel inflammation. Diarrhea followed by constipation can indicate poor digestion and/or a spastic colon. Magnesium may be beneficial in this situation. Spleen Activator or slippery elm may also be beneficial.
After a bout with diarrhea it is always good to take probiotics and minerals to replace lost mineral electrolytes. Minerals can be obtained from Combination Potassium, Recovery, or Mineral Chi tonic.
